Acupuncture Reduce Menopause Symptoms

A recent study concludes that a short course of acupuncture could significantly reduce some of the most unpleasant symptoms of menopause.

Acupuncture for Menopause Relief

Researchers tested acupuncture’s effectiveness again and it works. Menopause typically begins in the sixth decade of life and lasts for an average of 4–5 years. Its symptoms can impact overall well-being and affect daily life. Though treatable, current methods are not perfect. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is effective but increases the risk of breast cancer. Nonhormonal therapies, while free from hormonal risks, often have side effects like sleep disturbance, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue.

A Natural Alternative

There has been a growing interest in alternative therapies like acupuncture. Acupuncture, an ancient practice, is gaining recognition in mainstream medicine. It’s used for various conditions, including depression, chronic pain, epilepsy, and schizophrenia.

A more recent study out of the University of Copenhagen and the University of Southern Denmark examined acupuncture’s effects on menopause symptoms. Previous studies had methodological issues, such as poor design and small sample sizes, which limited their reliability.

Focusing on Hot Flashes

This study focused on hot flashes, a common and distressing menopause symptom. It involved 70 women experiencing menopause. For five weeks, half of the participants received a 15-minute acupuncture session once a week from skilled acupuncturists. The control group received no intervention. Participants completed questionnaires on menopause symptoms before the study and after 3, 6, 8, 11, and 26 weeks.

After just 3 weeks, the acupuncture group reported fewer hot flashes. At 6 weeks, 80% believed the sessions had helped. Acupuncture also reduced the severity of night sweats, sleep disturbances, emotional symptoms, skin issues, and hair loss.

Conclusion

For women avoiding standard treatments, acupuncture might be a valuable option. Acupuncture poses little risk of serious adverse events and could offer relief for menopause symptoms.
